However, one thing is certain, it originates from China. It is said that Chinese Emperor Shen Nung, a noted herbalist, stumbled across tea in 2737 BC when leaves from a tea bush blew into a cauldron of water he was boiling.
It took over 3000 years for tea to reach Japan, where it was elevated almost to a religion with the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
It wasn't until the 1650's that tea reached the shores of Britain and today, such is the popularity of tea it is the second most consumed drink after water.
